Ian Wright sends message to Stan Kroenke after Arsenal's European Super League U-turn

After the Gunners' failed attempt to join the European Super League, Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke is under pressure to sell the club, with Ian Wright joining those calling for the American to leave.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has urged Stan Kroenke, the club's owner, to sell the club after the European Super League debacle.

Former players and commentators have expressed their displeasure with the plans, which would have seen some of Europe's biggest clubs establish their own midweek competition in which they would be assured qualification every year.

Many of the 12 clubs that signed up for the Super League released statements on Tuesday night confirming they were pulling out due to public uproar, which included criticism from the Prime Minister and Prince William.

Out of the six English clubs that had signed up for the new competition, Arsenal was the only one to issue an apology in the public statements.

'The last few days have shown us yet again the strength of feeling our followers around the world have for this great club and the game we love,' the Arsenal board wrote in an open letter to the fans.

'We didn't need reminding, but the outpouring of support in recent days has given us more time to reflect and think deeply.

'It was never our goal to cause such anguish, but when the invitation to enter the Super League came, we did not want to be left behind, so we did not want to be left behind to ensure Arsenal's future.

'We are withdrawing from the planned Super League as a result of listening to you and the broader football community in recent days. We made a blunder, and we sincerely apologize.

'We understand that regaining your confidence in what we're trying to achieve here at Arsenal will take time, but let us be clear: our decision to join the Super League was motivated by our desire to protect Arsenal, the club you love, and to help the game you love through greater unity and financial stability.'

The club went on to say that 'the system needs to be fixed,' but admitted that supporting the Super League was a mistake.

Wright, like most other football supporters, is unable to forgive and forget and wants Kroenke, the club's sole owner since 2018, to quit Emirates Stadium.

'Remember who you are, what you are, and who you serve,' Wright tweeted in response to the club's message, before adding two more tweets with the hashtag #KroenkeOut.

Wright's first remark is a direct quote from his friend and former Arsenal teammate David Rocastle, who died of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2001 at the age of 33.

When the European Super League plans were first announced earlier this week, Wright said Rocastle would be 'turning in his grave" in a video posted to his social media accounts.

'When I saw Arsenal's name [as part of the European Super League plans], I simply couldn't believe it,' Wright said.

'This is the same Arsenal that was praised just a few weeks ago for its David Rocastle homage.

'If he knew what's going on right now, he'd be turning in his grave.'

'Is this how low we've sunk?" Since we aren't good enough to get into [the Champions League], we are now entering competitions.

'So, to the detriment of the English game, we're having a seat at a table where we have no right to be; it's shameful.'
