Erik ten Hag 'expects' to be reunited with Frenkie de Jong next season and believes Manchester United will land the Barcelona midfielder.
The Dutchman is United's top target this summer, and the club has postponed moves for other players in a desperate attempt to get the former Ajax star.
De Jong made his debut in Amsterdam under Ten Hag, and the two remain friends even after three years away.
Barcelona is committed to selling De Jong in order to balance the books at the Camp Nou, and Goal reports that United were confident that a £60 million sum would be sufficient to secure the midfielder.
The Spaniards are now reportedly pressing for a higher sum since United are keen for De Jong and he isn't totally sure of a move to Old Trafford.
Despite the minor hiccup, Ten Hag is believed to be convinced that De Jong will transfer to Old Trafford and that a deal will be reached.
United's original approach of roughly £52 million was reportedly rejected, while Barcelona wanted around £72 million.
The club is determined that they would not overpay for De Jong, especially because this is Richard Arnold's first summer as chairman.
United rejected to enter a bidding war with Liverpool for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, believing that other areas of the squad required more immediate attention.
