New Arsenal signing hints he wanted a different shirt number

New Arsenal signing hints he wanted a different shirt number

Sambi Lokonga implies that he might prefer a different shirt number.

Following his first friendly appearance for Arsenal, Albert Sambi Lokonga intimated that he genuinely desired a fresh shirt number.

Last Monday, Arsenal completed the signing of Albert Sambi Lokonga, signing him to a four-year contract with an option to extend until 2026. They also awarded him the number 23 shirt, which he wore against Millwall in pre-season.

Sambi Lokonga, on the other hand, claimed in his post-match Instagram status that he actually wanted the number 48, writing: "48 in the heart, 23 on the back!"

Prior to the signing, Belgian media speculated that Sambi Lokonga would wear the number 48 like he did at Anderlecht. We pointed out, however, that this was improbable given to Arsenal's shirt number policy.

Arsenal typically allows senior players to take numbers 1-35 before distributing the remaining numbers to junior players in alphabetical order. We faced the same problem with Alex Iwobi's desire to stay with 45 after breaking into the first team.

As with Iwobi, Arsenal appears to have put their foot down and insisted on Sambi Lokonga wearing a senior number. According to the u23 senior shirt number list, 48 will instead be used by young goalkeeper Hubert Graczyk.
