Florentino Perez issues warning to Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham after Super League backlash

Florentino Perez issues warning to Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham after Super League backlash

Florentino Perez, the newly appointed chairman of the European Super League, spoke to the media last night, providing more details on the revamped competition.

Following the announcement of the new-look European Super League on Sunday, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who is also the newly elected chairman of the newly-founded European Super League, gave an explosive interview last night, arguing that the clubs now involved cannot break free.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur revealed late Sunday evening that they would join Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Juventus in creating new mid-week competition in an attempt to break away from the UEFA Champions League.

Unsurprisingly, football fans across Europe have slammed the scheme, as have big-name commentators including Sky Sports Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville, who both strongly criticized the plan during an explosive Monday Night Football. Perez, on the other hand, has defended the decision, claiming that the tournament will advance football and be the future of the sport.

Speaking with El Chiringuito, the Spaniard opened up on the plans behind the tournament and why it would be the way forward for the clubs involved.

In addition, amid mounting pressure from elsewhere, especially the Premier League, he announced that the 12 clubs who agreed to join the scheme would not be able to leave it.

He said, ' 'The Super League's contract is legally binding. Nobody is allowed to leave; we will all work together. There was no problem when all of the clubs signed the contracts on Saturday.'

After a story by Mail football writer Olivier Holt reported that "cracks might be beginning to emerge' and that two 'English clubs are on the verge of losing their nerve,' Perez made this admission.

Perez also revealed that the key reason to shape the Super League was to try to bolster the bank accounts of the 12 clubs participating after a tough 12 months for everybody because of the pandemic, which has forced turnstiles to stand still and deprive fans the chance of supporting their teams.

Perez added, 'Many important clubs in Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom want to find a solution to a very bad financial situation."

'Playing more competitive games is the only way to go.' Instead of competing in the Champions League, the Super League will assist clubs in recouping their losses.

'We've lost a lot of money here at Real Madrid, and we're all in a poor position.'

'The only way to make money when there isn't any is to play more competitive games during the week.'

'The Super League would provide financial relief to the clubs.'
