Mikel Arteta provides worrying injury update on Arsenal duo

Following the pre-season friendly against Chelsea, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta issued a concerning injury update on Thomas Partey and Gabriel Magalhaes.

The Gunners were defeated 2-1 in their first game of The Mind Series. They weren't at their best, but a terrible refereeing decision cost them a goal.

That doesn't really matter in the preseason. The biggest source of concern was Partey's ankle injury, which forced him to be replaced in the 40th minute.

Arteta confirmed after the game that Partey was in discomfort and warned that the midfielder could be sidelined for a prolonged amount of time.

“I just spoke with the doctor,” he explained. He'll get a scan tomorrow, and things aren't looking good right now because he was in pain and couldn't continue, which is unusual for Thomas.”

Meanwhile, Gabriel has been sidelined with an ankle injury sustained while training with Brazil for the Olympics in Tokyo.

Arteta acknowledged that the Brazilian is out injured and that he does not know whether the center-back will be available for the season opener against Brentford.

"We don't know," he added. He's still hurt. He injured himself while training for the Olympics with Brazil, and he is currently unable to train with us. That appears improbable at this time, but perhaps he will recover quickly.”

From the perspective of a sports photographer:

Partey failed to regain his best form for the Gunners last season, missing nearly 20 games due to two separate injuries.

He looked bright in pre-season, and the new setback could be a significant blow for the Gunners ahead of the season opener against the Bees.

Granit Xhaka appears to be staying with the club despite recent speculation, but the club may be forced to recruit a new midfielder if Partey is out for an extended period of time.

Meanwhile, with Gabriel expected to miss the start of the season, Pablo Mari could see increased playing time in the left-sided central defense spot.

In the second half, he was paired with the new addition Ben White. White issued several last-ditch challenges, but fans will be hoping that the duo can find the appropriate balance.
